Ayurvedic and Home Remedies for Your StomachDiwali is the time to enjoy yourself. There is great celebration as far as food is concerned. Laddus, barfis, mysore paks, rosgullas, gulab jamuns, patasas, etc. Ahem! The savouries are aplenty, all waiting to be tasted. The week long celebration is all fun frolic, diyas and crackers. Let's think for a minute of the stomach upsets that result from over consumption of sweets and other fatty foods.

Indigestion is a reality one has to face after the Diwali Hungama. Here are a few Ayurvedic and home remedies that will help your stomach get back its regular digestive strength. Churan and Rasayanas help in digestion.

Trikatu Churan

This popular churan is used for stomach upsets. It consists of a mixture of Tippili, black pepper and dry ginger powders. One teaspoon of this mixture can be dissolved with a little warm water and taken at night after meals. In case of severe pain, it can be taken after lunch. This churan helps to relieve the heavy feeling in the stomach.

Triphala Churan

The three fruits in this are (amla) or myrobalan, Harad or galnut and Beleric myrobalan(Tandrikai). This churan is readily available in pharmacies. Amla and harad are popular digestives. A mixture of the two can be had in the night. One teaspoon of triphala churan can be taken with warm water. Triphala is very effective for constipation as well.

Bilvadi lehyam

This awleha or lehyam is very popular in the south. It is taken with warm water or with milk.

Herbs for stomach upsets

There are a number of home remedies for indigestion. Mint, dry ginger or sonth, fennel, basil or tulsi, cinnamon, dill (ajwain) are all very effective for stomach upsets.A decoction can be made of one of the herbs. For example, you can make a decoction of basil (tulsi). Take some basil leaves and boil them with 2 cups of water. This decoction can be taken thrice a day.

Relief from acidity

The most effective home remedy for relief from acidity (commonly called gas) is a cumin seeds (jeera) decoction. For this, dry roast two spoons of cumin seeds. While keeping the flame mild, add three cups of water and bring it to boil. One cup can be had either plain or with the addition of a little sugar . Similarly, aniseed (saunf) can also be had as a decoction for relief.

Fomentation

Hot water fomentation is also effective in indigestion. This can be done with a hot water bottle or with a hand towel or cloth dipped in hot water. You can keep it for ten minutes.

Reflexology

This method of acupressure is gaining in popularity. The ten fingers and toes are massaged, according to the pain. For stomach upsets and bloating, the palm is pressed at the centre. Even the centre of the sole is pressed for stomach upsets. The thumb and the big toe are pressed at the root.
