Pomegranate is a juicy fruit that is available in every region of our country. This nutritious fruit is of three types - the sour, the sweet and the sweet-sour variety. The sour variety is grown widely in our country. It is acidic in nature and helps to bring down the phelgm in the lungs. People with acidity problem should take this fruit in small quantities. The sweet variety has several medicinal properties. The juice of the sweet pomegranate aids in sharpening one`s memory power. It has some toning properties too and hence is used in the preparation of skin tonics. It helps in digestion and is good for people with heart ailments. This fruit is rich in Iron and pectin. It also increases the haemoglobin content in the blood. It acts as a mild laxative. Hence, people suffering from piles problem will benefit from it. Sweet pomegranate juice helps in strengthening the bones in growing children. In the North Eastern part of India this juice is used to knead flour.The sweet and sour variety is also nutritious, but acidic in nature. It is better to consume this variety along with some other citrus fruits.It is rich in phosphorous, calcium and iron. The rind of this fruit is useful to treat minor ailments that afflict children. For loose stools, grind the rind to a paste, or extract the juice and mix it with a little jaggery. You will find considerable improvement after administering the third dose.Pomegranate juice is a tonic for the intestine and the liver. For cough, take about 15 gms of black pepper, 10 gms of peepal leaf powder, and 45 gms of pomegranate tree rind and dry and powder them. Add 100 gms of jaggery syrup to this powder. It can be taken either in tablet form or as syrup. If it is in a syrup form then take one teaspoonful at a time. When suffering from eye irritation, grind the pomegranate leaves into a paste and apply this over the eyelids for relief.For healthy hair, you have a time tested method. Boil a litre of pomegranate juice (sour variety) with mustard oil and pomegranate leaves paste (100 gms). Cool it and use it for massaging the scalp every day.
