While most doctors recommend cutting down on excessive fat and alcohol, there are other foods that do us damage as well. Especially if we are vulnerable. Let's take expectant mothers for example. Or women with osteoporosis. What do they need to watch out for? During pregnancy: Don't double your calories because you need to eat enough for two. That isn't what the doctors mean at all. They merely want you to increase the nutrient level in your body. The foods that one will be better off avoiding while pregnant are: Large fish like shark, swordfish, king mackerel etc. They all contain a high level of methyl mercury that could cause damage to the nervous system of the unborn child.
Certain soft cheeses contain bacteria called Listeria. This is known to cause miscarriages in some instances. The cheeses to be avoided are Brie, Camembert, Roquefort, Feta and Gorgonzola. Cheese made with pasteurised milk is considered safe to eat.
Cold cuts and cold salads could contain harmful bacteria. Avoid them when pregnant or if nursing.Raw or undercooked eggs, meat and fish. Always settle for well-cooked food. They're less harmful.
