'Wine'-ing Away

'Wine'-ing away Do you belong to the many people to whom a wine is a wine is a wine? Are you the kind that does not know one kind of wine from another? Here are 3 questions that are answered - three steps closer to knowing your wines!

Who is a Sommelier?

A sommelier, or wine steward, is a (hopefully) trained employee of a restaurant. He or she is skilled in assisting you in pairing a suitable wine with your meal. Having an intimate knowledge of the wine offerings and meal preparation of the restaurant, the sommelier can greatly improve the odds of an enjoyable dining experience.

What is a Blend?

Often a single kind of grape is blended with one or more different kind or complementing type of grape to increase the complexity or appeal of a wine. In some wine regions, they are quite particular as to which kinds of grapes may be blended in one bottle. The blend may or may not be enumerated by percentage on a wine label.

What wine is best used in cooking?

The traditional rule of thumb is to cook only with a bottle of wine you would drink. While this eliminates the generic bottles of wines found in most supermarkets, it may set too high a standard. On the other hand, you would not want to use a treasured Bordeaux or fine Champagne in a sauce. Find a good-tasting, cost-effective wine (red and white) to use in cooking and keep a bottle on hand.
