If you are a nervous host, here are a few tips to make things easier for you when you entertain.
Don't get over ambitious. You don't have to throw a huge party just because Mrs. So and So did. Restrict your party to the numbers you can manage well. It depends on the size of your house and your ability to handle that many people.
You can throw a few small parties rather than one big one. This way you can invite all the people you want to, and you can have more fun. And your parties will remain manageable.
If budget is a constraint, don't go in for lavishness. Throw a 'desert party' where you will serve desert only. People will have their dinner at home and then walk in to spend a couple of leisurely hours at your place. Or if you like, you can decide on potluck. It's quite acceptable and a lot of fun.
Let your guest list for any party be a good blend of listeners and talkers. Too many listeners will make it a silent get together. Too many talkers? Believe me, not one of them will be interested in what the other is saying.
Always make sure your house smells pleasant when guests walk in. Strong aromas of onion, garlic, fish, household-cleaning agents etc. are all no nos. Pot pourri, scented candles, incense sticks or room fresheners are necessary.
If your guests have diet restrictions, your menu should include their needs. If you are inviting a diabetic home, make sure you have sugar free desert for him or her. Fat free food is a must for most people
If you want a change you can host a party in your back yard or terrace. Be flexible about it. You don't need a perfect venue to throw a fun party.
You want a classy ambience? Use candles instead of lights. And table clothes. And bring in a few potted plants. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes to your living room.
Always have soft music playing in the background. Loud music is not very conducive to conversation.
Do the best you can and focus on enjoying yourself. That's the secret of a successful party.
