1. Never Wear Horizontal Stripes



If you do, the side-to-side lines will visually widen whatever body part they happen to be on. So if you have large breasts, waist or hips, for example, horizontal lines will emphasise this fact.

But, if you have narrow shoulders, hips and breasts, horizontal stripes will make you appear wider than you are.

2. Never Wear Large Prints



This rule varies for each person.

If you're small and wear something large, you'll appear smaller.

If you're large and wear something small, you'll appear larger.

So make sure the print you choose suits your shape and size.



3. Never Mix Plaids And Prints Indiscriminately



While a few top notch fashion designers do manage to do this effectively, the lay person needs to take a lot of care to carry of this intriguing combination.

Keep with the same colour or design.

If the colours are different, the design should be the same. If the designs are different, the colours should be the same.

If one print has large shapes, the second should be smaller.

Study a few designer outfits, and then try a few of your own designs.

4. Never Wear Bulky Textures



Bulky textures tend to make you look bigger. Fur, cable knit sweaters - all add mass to the body. Wear them with care.

5. Never Wear Light Colours From The Waist Down



Light colours can make you look larger, especially around the hips. But there are some easy ways around this:

Dress in white from head to toe. Monochromatic colours make you look thinner and taller.

Use a vertical line to distract. Add a long scarf, or a long chain to focus attention vertically.
