Jewels 2001, the jewellery and watch exhibition was inaugurated by Ms. Rehane Yavar Dhalla on 12th April, in Chennai. For many of the exhibitors from Jaipur, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai, this was their second or the third show in Chennai.
The jewellery ranged from pearls to kundan to real gold. The Thewa collection showcased the antique look wherein the gold is fused with coloured glass to produce masterpieces. Antique jewellery from Kolhapur, Maharashtra was also on display.
And for those who did not have the inclination to buy the real thing, there was copper coated and gold formed jewellery. The styles ranged from antique to contemporary.
The variety of single strands of black, grey, pink and cream pearls proved to be a hit among many of the visitors. The pearls were imported from China and Japan. Other pearl jewellery included a combination with rubies and emeralds. They certainly bedazzled the visitor.
Prices? There was something for everyone. Pretty pearl earrings for the college student (Rs. 130 onwards). Bangles plated with a thin gold covering, offered with a life time guarantee, were priced at Rs.1,500 a pair.
Among the branded jewellery displayed was Finor from Italy. This line was targeted towards teenagers and had Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Aladdin's Lamp artistically fashioned into earrings, pendants and finger rings. Range Rs.2,000- Rs.3,500
