Don't agree to any assignment you would be ashamed to mention to your family. Play it safe. Remember, any moves taken by you now could define your reputation for years to come.
When a photographer calls you for an assignment, check his credentials. Ask for his business card. Call up his company and double check. Also talk to other models about who is safe to work with and who isn't.
If the shoot is away from the city, make sure you carry enough money to ensure your return ticket. In case things go wrong, you wouldn't want to be stuck without money to come back. A model's transport is usually provided, but always make sure you have a back up alternative.
Try to ensure you have some kind of prior agreement on travelling expenses. Talk about it. Get some kind of commitment from them to pay your hotel bills and for tickets. Though written agreements are the best, it isn't very common in India.
People don't always shoot in studios or outdoor locations. Homes and other places are also used. Wherever it is, ensure you have a private changing room. The door should have a lock on it. Especially if you are the only girl taken along.
Always check the exits of any studio. In case of a crisis, you should be able to exit real fast.
If there is something about the situation, that doesn't seem quite right, don't ignore it. You're uneasy, but there is no overt threat. Go by your gut instinct and play it safe.
Don't let the photographer's persuasive ways sweet-talk you into compromising your values. Don't do anything you're not comfortable doing. It's always better to talk these things over. If you are particular about avoiding any kind of provocative poses, tell your agent upfront, before the signing of the contract.
Most of all, teach them to respect your body. You may be modelling for their product, but that gives no one the right to touch you. Don't let people come too close to you. Always check on a photographer's/agent's reputation on these matters.
If you are new to the business, try and take an escort along. It will make you more comfortable while you find your feet. But having done so, don't keep jabbering away or try to make eye contact with the person. Concentrate on your job.
Don't put up your name and address on notice boards and hallways, even if they are advertising for models. You never know who's going to misuse it.
