In case you are planning to start a family of your own it will be a good idea to brush up your ideas on Parenting Skills. Think about the time you spent with your parents. You will look back with fondness about the times you spent with them, the time you went for your first date. May be you told them, may be you did not. But now that you are on your way to parenthood or have already become a parent, you may begin to understand the daunting task you Mother or your Father, or both of them had when they first held their bundle of joy.

Parenthood is a blessing but it is a a huge responsibility, too. Once you give birth to a child, you are given the responsibility of bringing up your baby and preparing him or her to take on the world. Human beings are social animals and at the same time, life is a difficult affair. It is a daunting responsibility and a very desired one.

Parenting Skills, in earlier times were handed down from one generation to another. This was more applicable in the case of joint families, where there were elders to give guidance to their younger family members. Be it a patriarchal society or a matriarchal society, the presence of elders served as a soothing experience. However, we have to keep in mind the changing structures of families in today`s world. This has made us take a new look at parenting skills.

About Parenting Skills

Spare the rod and spoil the child was the catch phrase for parents in the past. However, a lot has changed as far as child psychology is concerned. Now it is considered a bad practice to hit your child. Physically or verbally abusing a child is considered to be harmful and it should be strictly refrained from.

An essential aspect of good parenting skills is to develop a strong idea of "who is in charge," and at the same time develop a friendly relationship with your child. You should learn to be firm without being dictatorial. For example, if you child develops the practice of throwing tantrums learn to deal with these from an early stage. Parenting skills is about drawing a clear distinction between responsibilities, duties, and fun.

As children grow up they try out a number of activities. For example, if you find that your toddler is developing a habit of throwing things pick up those articles and simply do not give them to him or her, a second time for that day. Your child may throw a tantrum but tell him or her a very firm "No." Stick to what you insist on. This is applicable even when your child is crying for toys in a toy shop. From an early age, teach your child that it is not possible to get everything that he or she is asking for.

Once your child reaches the age of going to school, you will have to decide whether you will choose home schooling or you would prefer sending him to a private or public school. However, sending a child to a school is always advisable as going to school teaches a child to socialize with other children. He or she learns to interact with other adults (his teachers) and children of various age groups, and from different backgrounds.

Human beings are social animals and as a result, social interaction should be an integral part of growing up. Insisting that your child goes to the local playground, every day, is also essential. This will keep your child fit, and at the same time hone his or her social skills. Encouraging your child to mix with others is also essential as far as good parenting skills are concerned.

Can Good Parenting Skills Be Taught?

As your child grows, you will realize that no web site or book will really help you to `learn` parenting skills. At most, these resources will guide you. This is something you learn by trail and error. Each child is special, and needs to be dealt with in a different way. You have to devote a lot of time to your child, to learn what is really needed for your little bundle of joy.

It is all about developing a deep bond with your baby, involving him or her in the family. The child should be made to act and feel as a responsible member of the family. From going to the bank, to helping in the kitchen the child should be actively involved in family affairs. And one more thing, never forget to show your appreciation for what he or she is doing. Show your child that you care.
