A contact lens is an artificial or a cosmetic lens that is used for vision correction or for a therapeutic use. Eye contact lens is placed on the eye cornea. It is similar to the spectacles that we wear when our eyes gain some power, which can be either far sightedness or near sightedness. The credit for inventing these modern day contact lenses goes to the famous Chemist known by the name Otto Wichterle. Contact lenses serve the same purpose as do the conventional glasses or specs. The advantage of using contact lens is that they are extremely lightweight and are hardly visible when one wears it. There are many contact lens companies which produce contact lenses with a faint blue tint to make them well visible when using for cleaning and kept in storage solutions.These, days more than just for the purpose of healthy eyes, people are getting more attracted in sporting colored eyes. For this reason, these days, the cosmetic contact lenses are produced in different colors which change the eye appearance remarkably. These may just be for cosmetic use and might not have any power.

According to the latest estimations, there are about as many as 125 million people who use contact lens. The concept of contact lens has become very popular, since it is light weight, easy to use and most importantly a great substitute for the specs. The types of contact lens used are divided into rigid lens and soft lens. The appearance is believed to become more attractive wearing contact lenses for many people who do not look so great wearing glasses. They also have their own set of advantages besides this. Contact lenses are least affected wet weather and does not steam up like it happen with the specs. The best part of the contact lens is that one gets to view through a wider vision field. They are perfect for sporting activities and saves one from the tension of falling off from the eyes or breaking off which the specs do. The ophthalmological conditions (like keratoconus and aniseikonia) have better chances of correction with contact lens than specs.

The Corrective contact lenses are used for the vision improvement. The ChromaGen lenses are greatly suited for color vision defects though have some problems in the night. The Cosmetic contact lenses besides changing the eye appearance may also work in vision correction. But the color or design of the lens may cause slight problems in vision. The soft lenses are the Therapeutic contact lenses are used for treating the non-refractive eye disorders. A bandage contact helps in the protection of the injured cornea. They are highly effective in treating dry eyes, bullous keratopathy, keratitis, corneal ulcers and erosion, corneal edema, corneal ectasis, descemetocele, neurotrophic keratoconjunctivitis and others.
