Sheryl Crow deserves the highest respect. She is one of those rare musicians who writes and produces her own music. Her voice, with its scratchy undertone lends itself to the music she makes. And, guess what, she actually plays a half dozen instruments including the rather cumbersome accordion.
`The Globe Sessions' won a clutch of Grammys for Crow. And deservedly so. This one time backup singer for Michael Jackson has been in the spotlight since her critically acclaimed debut album, `The Tuesday Night Club'.
The Globe Sessions sees Crow at her best. It's a textured and mellower sound than her earlier works but the gritty edge still remains. The complexities of love are brought out in 'My favourite mistake' and 'Anything but down'. Check out the other songs on the album 'Riverside' and 'Crash and Burn'. The songs have a finely nuanced melancholy and the melodies just flow perfectly with the lyrics. And just when you get a bit low, Crow gets into the swing of things with a rollicking rendition of the old Bob Dylan hit, 'Mississippi.'
Crow's music is like old wine; it gets better with each hearing.
