She`s the sexy Latina with a bod that`s insured for millions, with a music producer boyfriend, Sean `Puffy` Combs draped on one arm and with the world swaying to her beat. Lopez is clearly the Diva Du Jour. She`s seemingly got it all " she acts (in Soderbergh films, no less), dances (in early Janet Jackson videos and as one of the `Fly Girls` in popular television series, `In Living Colour`) and now, sings. Hmm. She dances great, she looks fab, she acts reasonably well, so the million dollar question is, `How well does she sing?` Ah. Ouch. Not too well, I`m afraid. The music thankfully drowns, what`s at best, a slightly better than average voice. In fact, I`m not sure I even heard her in the first song released from the album, "If you had my lovin".
The strategy is to forget how she sounds and listen instead to the catchy, Latin rhythms of the music. It`s music that really makes you want to get up and groove; a dance album through and through. There`s "Waiting For Tonight" that was tailor-made to be played on Millenium eve. Also check out, "Let`s Get Loud" .
Rating: Lopez is riding the Latin wave with Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony. Her voice is nothing to write home about. She needs excellent production to compensate for her not being the next Aretha or Mariah. The question is, does she have lasting power?
