A priceless little gem. Macy Gray weds 70's funk and soul with hip-hop and R&B. Her scratchy vocals lend a je-ne-sais-quois to songs of love, sexuality, God and injustice. The lyrics, written by Gray, need some serious polishing up. "I can't wait to meetchu" she trills. Ahem, that's God she's talking about. And, " I 've committed murder......and I don't feel bad about it." Whatever, Macy. But the music is a cool retro-funk that you can chill out to. Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist, Arik Marshall helps out on the album. Macy's got a distinctive voice that comes across with sweet poignancy on her ballads, "Still" and "I Try".All in all, a voice to watch out for.
Rating: At the Grammy Awards this year, Rosie O'Donnel gave a free plug to Macy when she asked everyone to go out and buy this album. I suggest you follow Rosie's advice.
