He's the soulful lyricist of the Beatles, whose anthemic 'Imagine' reflected the peacenik wave that swept over the world in the 70's. This 1971 album has now been digitally remastered and remixed under the personal supervision of Yoko Ono.
This is a classic album with moods and lyrics that capture the angst of a generation. 'Imagine' coincided with the Vietnam War, flower power, Allen Ginsburg's, "Howl", Abbie Hoffman, LSD, free sex, race wars, civil rights, Muhammad Ali. It was an intensely tumultuous period where the whole world, it seemed, was into self-discovery and self-expression.
'Imagine' is just that. It's Lennon's personal odyssey articulated in what must be, amongst the most moving lyrics to ever hit the turntable. The title track and 'I Don't Want to be a soldier mama' are poignant and sweetly melancholic.
Rating: A great album made better by technology. It's the musical soul of a generation laid bare. Anguish never sounded better.
