This movie is a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom, but above all things, love, set as it is in an infamous, gaudy and glamorous Paris night club, circa 1900.
'Moulin Rouge'Director Baz Luhrmann ('Strictly Ballroom', Willliam Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet') brings together gorgeous period design and modern era pop tunes to create a unique comic/tragic motion picture experience.
Nicole Kidman portrays Satine, the sparkling star of the Moulin Rouge and the city's most famous courtesan. Satine is caught between the love of a young writer and another man's obsession. Ewan McGregor is the writer, Christian, who finds himself plunged into this decadent world where anything goes-except falling in love.
It's Paris 1900, where a melancholy young scribe Christian (McGregor) is tearfully writing (and narrating) the story of his doomed love affair with Satine (Kidman), the late star of the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre's most beautiful courtesan.
In a breathtaking swirl of movement and colour, the heady, voluptuous, delirious world of 'Paris' celebrated night club/dance hall is brought to vibrant life.
With the finagling of his pal, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (John Leguizamo), Christian ends up in Satine's boudoir. Satine mistakenly believes that Christian is the "Duke" (Richard Roxborough) an endlessly wealthy man, whom she is supposed to bed so that the Moulin Rouge owner Zidler (Jim Broadbent) can secure financing to turn the venue into a legitimate theatre.
Unfortunately for the real duke, the beautiful young bohemians, Christian and Satine fall in love. The Duke demands of Zidler not only the deed to the Moulin Rouge but exclusive rights to Satine as well.
Worse though is the fact that Satine is dying of that classic 19th century disease- consumption. She spends every possible moment before her untimely demise helping Christian, along with Toulouse - Lautrec and his comic relief cohorts, to write the opening attraction for the new theatre, an epic musical that neatly reflects the melodrama of the Christian - Satine - Duke triangle.
With the Duke's unrequited obsession and incensed jealousy having passed the boiling point, everything comes together on opening night, as theatrical and "real life coverage" play out on stage in full public view.
