With improbable names like Natalie, Alex and Dylan what do you expect? This is a plotless, mindless and completely implausible movie. And know what else? I loved it!
'Charlie's Angels'
'Charlie's Angels' is the new, improved Millennium version of the original 70s television series of the same name. Natalie (Cameron Diaz), Alex (Lucy Liu) and Dylan (Drew Barrymore) are the troika that comprise Charlie's Angels. They are three sexy, sassy, saucy private investigators who work for the mysterious Charlie (the disembodied voice of John Forsythe) via his right hand man, Bosley (Bill Murray). The Angels are employed by Vivian Wood (Kelly Lynch), the President of Knox Technologies to rescue the company's brilliant founder Eric Knox (Sam Rockwell). It transpires that Knox has been kidnapped for the purpose of getting him to part with some earth shattering high fangled technology that, of course, will make its possessor immensely powerful and immensely rich. Oh God! We always knew an original storyline wasn't going to be this movie's strong suit.
Armed with slap up disguises aimed to show maximum body surface (think belly dancer, geisha, Swiss yodler, race car driver), the latest gizmos and some ass kicking martial arts manoeuvres, the trio pulp the villains and prove that you can win it all!
Diaz, Liu and Barrymore rock. This is a chick flick on high voltage. For all those years when James Bond patronised his lady cohorts, this is comeuppance time. Charlie's Angels make Bond look like a wussy wimp. Cool action, plenty of gloss, excellent production values and comely vivacious vixens make this a total riot. Original Angels Farah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson seem completely bland. In their new incarnation, Charlie's Angels kick some serious ass. Ah, while you're about it, you might just catch a glimpse of Matt LeBlanc, Tom Green, Crispin Glover and Luke Wilson who hover somewhat helplessly around the fearsome threesome.
Tres campy. Loved it. Mark my words, twenty years from now this is going to be one of those cult films that freshman co-eds will love.
Rating: O.K. don't take my word for it. But how about Ayn 'Fountainhead' Rand? Some years ago on a Phil Donahue show, Ms. Rand said that she loved 'Charlie's Angels', "It's not realistic, it's not about the gutter, it's not about the half-witted retarded children.... it's about three attractive girls doing impossible things. And because they're impossible, that's what makes it interesting".
