Hong Kong based star of martial arts films, Jackie Chan, has heeded the call of animal rights organisation PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). He has written a letter to Prime Minister Vajpayee asking the Government to take up immediate measures to halt the cruel treatment meted out to cattle.

In his letter, Mr. Chan stated, "I am greatly saddened to learn of the pain and suffering endured by cattle during their transport and slaughter. I am especially alarmed that such abuses, while illegal under India's stringent animal welfare laws, continue in this wonderful land where reverence for life is a matter of national pride."
