'Mann Ke Manjeere'

'Mann Ke Manjeere' has an all woman star cast. This musical album boasts the talents of India's most formidable female vocalists. It's an eclectic collection spanning classical singer Shubha Mudgal to Rukmabai who was stricken with polio and overcame this handicap to become the first woman Manganiyar to perform in public. Then there is Gujarati folk singer Diwliben Bhil whose soaring vocals lend power to her folksy melodies.
Also give a listen to Mahalakshmi Iyer, who can sing in 16 languages including Arabic and was last heard trilling away in 'Kandukondein, Kandukondein.'
This is a great album worthy of being recommend unreservedly. Shubha Mudgal's ode to a woman's tenacity in the opening song is a stirring one and sets the tone for the rest of the album. These are voices that speak of strength, courage under adversity and dignity under duress. Strong voices, fresh voices, unfettered voices that speak from the soul.
Another positive feature of this album is that proceeds from album sales will be donated to 'Breakthrough' an NGO active in causes relating to social justice and human rights. 'Breakthrough' activists state that the album is an effort to make people aware of the hopes and desires of a woman.
Rating: An eclectic album covering a spectrum of musical sounds. There is a rare musical integrity in this album. A must buy. Viva woman power!
