Class Act

'Fiza'Everyone in Bollywood has their fangs out for 'Fiza'. The movie marks the directorial debut of film critic Khalid Mohammed who has used his fangs to tear into every film that Bollywood has ever produced, without exception.

Well, the fanged ones might have to hold their canines just a little bit longer. If the music is anything to go by, the movie is going to be one of those rare entitiesa cross over hit that straddles commerical and art cinema.

Music director Anu Malik has come up with a sure-fire winner. No little credit should also go to resident musical genius AR Rahman who produces excellent supplementary music. Throw in lyricist Gulzar and the music companies are already hopping with delight. Khalid Mohammed has also tapped other talents like lyricist Sameer, musician Ranjit Barot, singers Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam, Jaspinder Narula, Karsan Sargathiya and the indomitable Asha Bhosle. The final result is sheer magic.

'Na Leke Jao' about the death of a loved one is rendered in the soulful voice of Jaspinder Narula. You die a thousand deaths as the poignancy seeps through. The peppy love solos by Asha Bhosle ('Ankh milaongi') and Sonu Nigam ('Gaya Gaya Dil') balance out the starkness of the movie's theme which Ranjit Barot captures in his main thematic score, 'Mere Watan.' Anu Malik does a good job with his 'Aaja Mahiya' and 'Tu Fiza hai'.

But the show is stolen by the qawwali number 'Piya Haji Ali'. The song marks the first time that Rahman has written a traditional qawwali number. The song is complex, layered and ultimately, absorbing.

Rating: Class all the way. The music, the vocals, the lyrics- just one word, outstanding. You kind of think if the music is so good, I wonder how the film will be? Music to Khalid Mohammed's ears?
