A painter's life is now a bio-pic.

Mexican actress Salma Hayek is currently shooting for a Miramax film based on the tempestuous life of fellow Mexican, painter Frida Kahlo. The role of the thick browed, iconic Kahlo was much coveted- Hayek had to beat back the likes of Madonna and Jennifer Lopez to land the part.

Kahlo was born of European-Mexican parentage. Her paintings were deeply feminist and strongly against the capitalist, mechanistic age which Kahlo believed had robbed people of their essential humanity. Her brooding paintings are still riveting. Kahlo's works are also known for a series of stunning thick-browed self-portraits. Her work was strong on colour, employed vivid imagery and was full of indigenous motifs. Kahlo once said of her paintings, "They thought I was a surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my reality".

Kahlo suffered from ill health. She spent many years on a sickbed and underwent a series of operations following a traumatic bus accident. Her personal life was also fairly unhappy- she had a passionate love hate relationship with her husband, fellow artist and muralist Diego Rivera.
