And the award goes to..

Tabu, whose performance in "Astitva" won her critical acclaim, was adjudged the 'Best Actress' at the seventh Annual Screen awards for excellence in cinema, television and music. Tabu plays the role of Aditi Pandit, a woman whose individual identity is suppressed by her husband.

Bollywood's hottest young star Hrithik Roshan won the 'Best Actor' as well as the 'Most Promising Newcomer' awards. His debut movie, 'Kaho Na Pyar Hai' picked up a clutch of awards. Among the 8 awards it won included Best Film, Best Director (Rakesh Roshan) and Best Music (Rajesh Roshan).

The awards ceremony this year coincided with the 50th anniversary of the weekly Screen. On the occasion, two filmmakers Dev Anand and B. R. Chopra who began their careers in Hindi cinema 50 years back were also honoured. Pran, another versatile actor, was honoured with the 'Lifetime Achievement' award. Similarly, Screen also paid tribute to 'Allika-e-Tarannum' Noor Jahan who passed away last month. Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar received the trophy. Another family to be felicitated for completing 50 years in the film industry were the Roshans--actor-producer-director Rakesh Roshan, his brother music director Rajesh Roshan and now Hrithik. Rakesh's father Roshan was a renowned music director.

Paresh Rawal bagged the award for his performance in a comic role, while Niraj Vora walked away with his trophies for 'Best Dialogue and Screenplay' for "Hera Pheri". Sonali Bendre (Humara Dil Aapke Paas Hai) and Shilpa Nawalkar (Kairee) won the 'Best Actress in a Supporting role' and 'Most Promising Newcomer' (female) awards respectively. Sanjay Dutt picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor (Mission Kashmir). Alka Yagnik (panchi nadiya...) from Refugee was the 'Best Female' playback singer. Lucky Ali won best male playback singer for 'Ek Pal Ka Jeena' from "Kaho Na Pyaar Hai".

Mahesh Manjrekar was given a 'Special Jury' award for making two socially relevant films "Nidaan" and "Astitva" during the year. He also bagged the "Best Story" award for "Astitva".

Amithab Bachchan won the award for 'Best Ancho' on television. His "Kaun Banega Crorepati" has been an enormous success in India. The game show also picked up the award for 'Best General Entertainment Show'.

The awards ceremony was held on January 20th in Mumbai.
