Ms. Koirala, who is Nepalese, has apparently been moved by the plight of scores of Nepalese women who are smuggled into India and finally land up in the brothels of Mumbai and Calcutta.
As Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Koirala will be required to talk about the various aspects of the problem of trafficking, its fall-out on women and children, and also to urge governments and social organisations to do their bit in tackling the problem.
Ms. Koirala is likely to be the star campaigner in UNIFEM's fortnight long programme scheduled for next month, which will focus primarily on trafficking in women and children in South Asia.
Trafficking in women and girls, primarily for prostitution, is a global phenomenon. According to one UN estimate, profits earned from global trafficking exceed the profits earned from the sale of illegal drugs. A situation report on India says that nearly two million children are abused and trafficked globally every year, with South Asia taking a lead in the volume of trafficking in children for sexual exploitation.
