Actress Sonali Bendre was arrested by the Social Service Wing of the Mumbai police along with photographer Amit Ashar and designer Ashley Rebello. They were later released on a bail of Rs 12,000 each.
The arrest was in connection with a case filed in 1998 for "offending religious sentiments". Sonali had posed for the cover of 'Showtime' magazine (March 16-31 1998) in a yellow shirt which bore the Om symbol and other religious scriptures and little else. The photograph was taken by Ashar, while Rebello had designed the shirt.
They were arrested three years after the case was filed since the police received sanction only last week from the State Government to prosecute them. They were held under Section 295 (A) RW 34 of the IPC, which deals with deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
