It is most often the bane of our lives " whatever be the age group we belong to, all of us dread to measure our waistlines. Why is it so difficult to trim this area even when you strictly follow all diet norms and devote adequate time to exercise? “God! It is so embarrassing when my tailor holds the measuring tape round my waist!" wails Mala, who is being measured for her trousseau. She is going to be married in a month's time and to her consternation, her waistline refuses to show signs of slimming even though her weighing machine shows she has lost weight.

Our dieticians at Sitagita have these words of advice to all those who would like to keep a check on their waistlines.

  1. Never miss breakfast. Try to include a whole-grain cereal and skimmed milk followed by a fruit every day. It will give you a filled-up feeling and you won't feel hungry for a long time after that.
  2. Check for hidden calories in foods like candies, coffee with cream and sugar, soft drinks, sodas and alcohol. You will be taken aback when you calculate the calories you have taken in.
  3. Drink even more than the mandatory eight glasses of water. Bout ten glasses spread out during the day will help to give you a full feeling in your stomach and incidentally will help to flush out all the toxic wastes too.

  5. Distract yourself whenever you feel those untimely hunger pangs. Go out for a drive, talk to a friend, play some instrument or simply just get out of the house and avoid the temptation of the contents of your fridge.
  6. Check on the many health websites to know your optional calorie intake and your optimum weight based on your statistics as well as the exercises that would suit your requirements.
  7. Maintain an honest food diary and check it at the end of each day to know where you have slipped up. This awareness will go a long way towards curbing the indiscriminate snacking that is often the hidden cause of a failed diet.
  8. Avoid bringing high calorie foods into the house and your workplace. This way you are not exposed to unnecessary temptations.
  9. Learn to eat less. You do not have to walk away from the dining table feeling stuffed. See that you take smaller helpings and always choose fruits and veggies that will need chewing before you swallow. The longer you take to eat, the fuller you will feel. Spend at least twenty minutes over each meal. People who finish their meal in minutes are often the overweight ones.
  10. Brave yourself to face the results on your weighing machine every week. If you compare your weekly results and check your food diary, you will be able to pinpoint the reason for the weigh gain.
  11. Get up and get going! Sitting on your backside the whole day is certainly not going to improve matters. At least thirty minutes of exclusive exercise time is essential if you want to control your weight. Sixty minutes would see to it that you are always trim and fit!

So what are you waiting for? Get on that weighing machine, check your weight and get going on your own common sense based weight loss program! Best of luck!
