The news doesn't get grimmer than this. A three-year-old girl in London has died of obesity. The disproportionate amount of fat in her body caused heart failure.

And what's more - doctors are expecting this phenomenon to grow. The inordinate amount of junk food children eat are causing major health problems. Incidences of diabetes, cancer and heart diseases are on the rise. The lives of the little ones are being shortened.

How can we stem this disaster from spreading and turning into a global tragedy? The answers are obvious - and simple.

  • Improve your child's eating habits. Get them to eat nutritious food - with adequate fibre, vitamins, proteins and minerals.
  • Television watching not only robs your child of activity and exercise - but it also exposes him to a lot of junk food ads, which would feed his eating habit.

  • Consult a doctor. If your child is termed fat or obese, don't waste time - do all that you can to get him to reduce weight.
  • Remember - there are no quick solutions. Losing weight will take a long time. But the effort has to begin immediately and be sustained forever.
  • Put your child on 3 square meals a day. Any snacking in between should compromise of fruits or salad vegetables only.
  • Encourage and even push your children to indulge in physically active lives. Teach them to enjoy games. Even if they don't get competitive about it - they should play enough to substantially push up their activity level. Show them the joys of dancing to music everyday.
  • Increase their water intake. Water helps fill the tummy and stems the need to snack. Warm water also tends to flush out cellulite.
  • Cut down the fries and the sweets at home. It will be easier on the kid and healthier for the family - if the whole family follows a low fat, low sugar diet.

It could be very difficult to keep refusing food to a child. The secret is to keep the child distracted and happy. A lot of families say that buying a little pup has helped their child get his mind off food, increased his activity level - and made him a healthier and happier child.
