This is an amazing story of a married lady with two children. She lost 20 kilos in six months. "Several years of dieting did not help. One fine day, I took a good look at myself in the mirror, and life changed after that." Ms Veena 38, says that after trying out many methods and going through alluring advertisements, she decided to chalk out a diet plan and exercise regimen for herself. Read the story in her own words.
"In the beginning, I was not sure about my efforts, but my children, aged 10 and 12, were my motivating factors. I went ahead with sensible dieting and some exercises and I would like to share my experience with you."
THE FIRST STEP
Since I had a weighing machine at home, I first weighed myself. I was 83 kilos. For my 5ft 6 inches height, I was surely overweight. For the first week, I ate the same foods I ate before, but in smaller quantities. There was no change. I was upset, but my children offered to exercise with me. "Play music when you exercise" said my daughter. That did the trick.
THE FIRST RAY OF HOPE
The second and third week brought results. I had lost 2 kilos at the end of the third week. My diet plan was nothing extraordinary, but I ate only three times. Since I had to do the cooking for the rest of the family, eating right was an uphill task. In the morning, I had a cup of tea with very little sugar. For breakfast, a small cup of sprouts, two or three pieces of papaya and a glass of fruit juice without sugar. I did a regular routine of ten exercises. Two for the abdomen, two for the thighs, two for hands, two breathing exercises and two simple yogasanas (Padangushtasana and Trikonasana). Every morning, at the crack of dawn, I did a 2 kilometre walk.
HEALTHY LUNCH
My lunch was either vegetable salads or sprouts. A small cup of skimmed milk curd, to wash down the salad, was my regular intake.
Initially, I tried to avoid cereals, but was told about the deficiency it would cause. I started taking a small teaspoon of rice with cooked dal everyday. Dinner was a time for sumptuous soups. All the vegetables, including cabbage and spinach, were included in this.
I heard that cabbage soup helped to break the fat cells so I had that quite often. A fruit was a must every night. In between, I had at least 8 glasses of water everyday. Though this was my diet pattern for three months, occasionally, I was tempted to have an ice cream or a sweet like gulab jamun or laddu.
A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
I think a positive attitude is a must. I would think I was slim and beautiful all the time from the second month onwards. This paid off. I took out my jeans, worn some years ago, and put it in front of the mirror in the belief that some day I would squeeze myself into it.Hey presto! I achieved success. At the end of three months, I weighed 8 kilos less. That spurred me on. I sweated it out by doing some more exercises.
THE GRAND FINALE
Though I did alter my diet a little to include a little oil and cereals, I always had something to eat when I was very hungry. I got my fingers and toes massaged to improve the blood circulation. This is called reflexology. I also had vitamin supplements suggested by the doctor.
I lost 20 kilos at the end of six months. Though it is two years now, I have tried my best to maintain the weight. My advice to other overweight women is to set a goal and work towards it.Always consult your doctor before embarking on a diet regimen.Blood pressure and heart condition must be checked.
Success will be at your doorstep. Hope this inspires you to lose weight and maintain it too.
