Before every workout, you need to warm up a little. It's essential you do. It isn't considered healthy or sensible to start off with rigorous exercise. A premature physical overload can lead to traumatic injuries.

  • A warm up helps your heart rate and blood pressure slowly increase in anticipation of more demanding activity.

  • Your blood vessels open up to accommodate the augmented blood flow to the muscles that are being worked out.

  • In short, a warm up helps your body ready itself for rigorous activity.

If your body isn't readied for a workout, you could well end up straining and spraining various limbs.

  • Besides, a warm up also helps you mentally. It puts you in the right frame of mind for a fruitful workout.

  • Plunging directly into a workout may not have you prepared for a sustained and effective session.

Cooling down after a workout is just as important. Never ever head for the shower immediately after an energetic workout. You need to have a short transition period to get your body back to normal.

  • During a workout, a large quantity of blood flows to the muscles that are specifically being exercised.

  • If the exercises are suddenly stopped, the blood continues to flow to the concerned limbs    though it isn't needed any more.

  • It will tend to accumulate in the limbs, causing the circulation to get sluggish.

  • This could result in fainting or giddiness.

But by continuing to move around after the workout, you can maintain normal circulation and avoid unpleasant consequences.

  • As you finish your workout, you need to slow down gradually and keep moving for at least five minutes. For instance, after you have finished your jogging, don't come to a full stop. Keep walking around for a few minutes. It will make a world of difference to you. You will feel invigorated instead of exhausted.

  • Gentle stretches are considered the ideal way of cooling down.

Warming up and cooling down does take time. But it enhances the effects of the workout.
