  • Hiking and walking Explore new places by walking through them together. Whether it's a city or forest trek, be sure to pack snacks and water, wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, and don't forget sun protection (hats, sunglasses with straps, and sunscreen).
  • Cycling Bicycles come in all sizes to allow every member of the family to join in the fun on wheels. Don't forget water, high-energy snacks, helmets, and a bike repair kit. Cycle out of the city or town. Look for quaint destinations you have never had the time to visit.
  • Skates and roller-blades Both children and adults can enjoy skating or roller-blading while getting excellent aerobic exercise. Look for the special areas set aside in your neighbourhood for these popular activities. When you're skating, be sure to wear helmets, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards to prevent injuries from falling. Rinks located near the beach are ideal for family outings - in case some adults chicken out, they can always walk on the beach - or around the rink!
  • Swimming Many families love to spend time in and near the water, whether it's at the ocean, on a lake, or in a swimming pool. Remember that water sports require extra vigilance, especially if you're swimming with young children. Know where your kids are at all times, and make sure that young children and those who don't swim wear certified life preservers. And don't forget the sunscreen.
  • Dancing Older children might enjoy dancing with their parents. It's wonderful exercise and helps build coordination and memory. Check out dancing classes.
Be creative. The next time you're planning a birthday or other family party, why not build in opportunities for exercise? Have your celebration at a bowling alley. Go kite flying or join a walk-a-thon. There are so many ways to combine family time with the exercise you need to stay healthy together. Be safe and enjoy!
