How do you exercise? Do you suddenly launch into a vigorous exercise schedule - and plan to burn off calories at a quick rate? Well, you're going about it the wrong way.

Your body needs to warm up and loosen out in order to get the optimum benefit from exercising. No matter how busy you are, it is important you take the time and trouble to do your stretches and warm up properly.

  • To keep muscles flexible, gently stretch them three times a day. This should be done gradually and deliberately. Vigorous bouncing or pulling of tight muscles serves no purpose. In fact the muscles only become tighter and the body gets less flexible.

  • Our bodies are programmed against sudden stretches and over stretching. When we exercise vigorously without doing our stretches and warming up, a reflex contraction occurs that keeps muscles from extending fully.

  • This results in straining of muscles or tearing of ligaments.

  • Warming up also helps prepare your heart get ready for an increased activity level. The heart keeps healthier and it can gradually increase its pace to suit the required activity. Sudden vigorous activity isn't healthy for the heart.
