You may be a fitness freak, running and jogging everyday to keep healthy. But what about your family? Are they still in bed when you let yourself out of the house everyday or do they join you? Remember, don't confine exercising to a solo activity. Exercise together as a family to stay strong. And it may be the simplest way to keep disease away.

Diabetes, high blood pressure, and other diseases are strongly linked to diet, obesity, and lack of exercise. Studies are beginning to show that this lack of exercise (combined with a diet high in fat and sugar) in childhood can increase your risk of developing these health problems earlier in life. So the sooner your family starts the better!

So how do you do it?

  • One of the easiest ways for a family to exercise is to walk together around the neighbourhood, or to the park.

  • Going away on hiking trips with the family on weekends. This not only keeps you healthy but it will also keep the children off the couch and away from the television.

  • Join a gym or take exercise classes together.

  • Go swimming with the family whenever you get the chance.

  • If you have bikes (and helmets), haul them out and spend a couple of hours biking.

  • Get involved in your children's sports. If your son or daughter play cricket or basket ball, join them.

  • Although it's sometimes tough to get the children to help out, housework is good exercise. Sweeping, polishing furniture, even dusting can be a workout.

  • Washing windows, washing the car, and walking the dog are ways to help with the chores and move around.

  • And gardening can be fun for younger children and a way to interest them in nature.

  • One of the most pleasurable ways to exercise is to play some music and dance around with your children.

It's important to try and stay active regularly. Most of us are so busy and stressed every day that the thought of adding one more thing that "should" be done makes it easy to ignore. But if you're feeling exhausted and worn out at the end of the day, exercising can give all of you more energy. Remember, your family needs at least thirty minutes of physical activity in a day.

Exercising together as a family is a wonderful way to help your family be together longer and healthier. So, put on your walking shoes and walk your way to good health.
