Ayurvedic diet, food and digestion:

In Ayurveda, food is cooked with a focus on good digestion and nutrition.. This is why Ayurveda also recommends a particular sequence in eating the foods. This ensures that digestion is easier and the body can get the maximum benefit.

Taste:

A balanced diet involves having six tastes - salty, sour, sweet, astringent, bitter present in every meal or atleast have them once everyday. And so, it is important to include the six tastes when preparing an Ayurvedic meal.

Food and Environment Factors:

Environment influences our body and so Ayurveda recommends diets for different season for the body to adjust and prevent proneness to illnesses prevalent during the season.During summer, which is considered a pitta season, individuals are prone to sunburn, acne etc and so it is recommended that cool, light fruits and salads have to be consumed to counter the imbalances caused by pitta.

During winter, the vata season, people are prone to colds, arthritis, rheumatism etc and so it is recommended that we eat warm, oily and wholesome meals to lubricate the system against the dryness of Vata season.

During spring, which is a kapha season, people are prone to bronchial ailments, common colds etc. Ayurveda recommends foods like honey and millet to be included in the everyday meal to pacify the dryness.

Food should be fresh:

Ayurveda advocates eating fresh foods. According to ayurveda fresh foods have the maximum energizing effect. It is healthier to avoid left overs and highly processed foods in everyday diet.Ayurveda believes that foods lacking freshness lack the vital energy and so are difficult to digest. Including a fresh vegetable or fruit juice in the diet is highly recommended for good health.
