  • The most common concern regarding regular night shift work is obviously the total disruption in the sleep cycle which gives rise to fatigue, inability to keep awake during working hours and definitely a reduced and poor quality of sleep. Not only does sleep regulate body temperature, blood pressure, gastro function, hormone function and pulse, it also charts out time for various activities. With night shifts, the body rhythm gets disrupted and takes time to adjust to the new requirement.

  • One of the first things to get affected is the daily nutrition which happens because of altered eating habits. On night shifts, regular, nutritious food is not available and one resorts to whatever fast food that is readily available. Also night is the time when the body's metabolism is at its lowest. This means an extra dependence on caffeine to get some extra boost to sustain them until the end of the shift.

  • With the night shift, one's regular time for exercise gets shifted or even abandoned. Everyone knows that exercise is a regular stress buster but somehow it seems to be last on the priority list for most people.
  • Quality time with family and friends gets seriously affected. The night shift worker is invariably asleep when all the rest are awake and so misses out on a lot of family activities. Not to mention the general fatigue that causes one to lose interest in activity of any kind.
  • Until the night shift worker gets adjusted to the timings, the body is less alert at night and this can result in mishaps due to lack of concentration, especially if one is given a task that needs sharp application and focus. This can lead to a fall in self esteem as one is pulled up constantly until the person gets adjusted.
  • Sometimes, invariably, a dependence on alcohol or even performance oriented drugs can result. A sharp need for sleep inducing tablets during daytime to get that much needed sleep is also indicated.

A quick glance at these problems that exist in the BPO industry reveals that they are not beyond practical solutions. All it needs is a little application until the body rhythm gets established in the new pattern.
