Type 1 diabetes mellitus is one of the major types of diabetes which affects a large number of people world wide every year. The type 1 diabetes mellitus is also known as T1D and IDDM. This is very dangerous for the patients if proper care and diagnosis is not done. Control in diets as well as exercises will not help in reducing this type of diabetes.
There are various types of tests prescribed for testing the type 1 diabetes mellitus. According to the doctors the most useful test is the C-peptide assay. But in order to get results in the C-peptide test, it will take months as until and unless the insulin production has ceased, nothing will come up in this test. Other than this, you can also go in for the Glucose tolerance test and the GAD 65 antibodies test as well.
There are as such no treatments for the type 1 diabetes mellitus. Usually the doctors prescribe the insulin injections which should be taken regularly by the patients as and when prescribed by the doctors. Other than this, blood glucose should be controlled and should be keenly observed. If not treated properly, this diabetes may lead to the fatal diabetic ketoacidosis and the diabetic coma as well. At times, even pancreas replacement is also suggested by the doctors when the conditions are extreme. Scientists and the doctors are also experimenting with the option of replacing the beta cells as well. This transplantation will be only be done on the people who are more than 18 years of age.
Lot of research and other experiments are taking place in order to find out a total cure for the type 1 diabetes mellitus patients. Bioengineering approach and islet cell transplantation approach are also considered in order to reduce the disease. Other than this, other approaches are also considered in curing the disease.
