she has designed the garments of 17 beauty pageant aspirants, of whom, 13 have won the prestigious Miss India beauty pageant title. Among them, 17 women have also competed in the International beauty pageants like, Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia-Pacific, wearing the ensemble of Ritu Kumar. Some of the famous personalties which she have dressed are Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta and Diya Mirza in their beauty pageant title competitions. As she has been designing the attire of Miss India participants from the year 1994, she has won the Best Gown Awards a number of times. Some of the models while competing at the international level have also won awards in the rounds of national costume which were designed by this talented designer.
Though Ritu Kumar specializes in designing Indian attire, she has also won awards for designing western garments. Her specialty is best expressed in traditional Indian ensemble, marked with embroidery work and usage of different type of textiles. Ritu Kumar has experimented with leather, cotton ans silk to create her masterpieces. You will be astonished to know that she started designing and making clothes with just some block printers from a village near Kolkata, around 28 years back. She has contributed a lot to the wardrobe of famous personalities like Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Ruchi Malhotra, Manpreet Brar, Lara Dutta, Rani Jeyraj, etcetera.
The name of the boutique of Ritu Kumar is Ritu's Boutique, now known as Ritu. There are also other outlets of Ritu Kumar, situated in different locations all over India. Recently, she has also launched 'Costumes and Textiles of Royal India', her book, which has been published by Christie's in London.
