The quintessential charm About Bollywood lies in its quality production of films. Deewar is one of the famous commercial Hindi films released in the 70s. This film directed by Yash Chopra affirmed Amitabh Bachchan's unquestionable supremacy over his contemporary actors. It was made upon the angry-young man image of Amitabh Bachchan, an identity which lasted for long and brought him unparalleled fame.
The film is particularly endearing to film lovers and critics for its catchy dialogs and dashing persona of Amitabh Bachchan. Deewar was released at a time when many of the idealistic yearnings of the younger generation crashed under the crude realities of corruption. While Amitabh Bachhan portrayed the character of Vijay in Deewar, actor Shashi Kapoor supported him competently by playing the role of his brother Ravi Verma. The rebellious traits in the nature of Vijay in Deewar makes the him one of The Unforgettable Characters in Bollywood.
The plot of Deewar revolves around the lives of Vijay and Ravi Verma, who follow entirely different career paths. While Vijay takes up smuggling, Ravi becomes a policeman who is asked to apprehend his brother.
The film raises a few complicated questions with regards to social morality and the human reaction to it. Vijay in Deewar goes against stereotype social trends which are seen as prerequisites for being a perfect citizen. He points out the pretensions of a society that fails to protect his honest father against the cruelties of the oppressors. Vijay in Deewar does not bother if he is tagged as an outlaw. He continues to mock the established social norms by getting himself involved in a pre-marital sexual relationship with a bar girl Anita (Parveen Babi).
Even as a young boy, he acts selflessly by giving up his education so that his elder brother Ravi can pursue it. He grows up with the haunting awareness of the unjust humiliation his father got. Life taught him to speak and fight for one's own rights and he precisely did the same thing. The film ends with Vijay getting killed in an encounter with his police officer brother Ravi and Ravi being honored with a police gallantry award.
