Raju in Awara

Awaara is a famous Bollywood film which was released in the year 1951. This film was directed and produced by Raj Kapoor. He also plays the leading role of Raju in Awara. His real-life father Prithviraj Kapoor also stars as his on-screen father, Judge Raghunath. Raj Kapoor had portrayed the minute details when he played the character of Raju in Awara and that too with ease and confidence. The film was made in collaboration with the famous team of director/producer Kapoor and writer Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. The music of the film was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. The song "Awara Hoon sung by Mukesh was portrayed by Raju in Awara. This song was a huge hit and made the character of Raju popular among the masses. This song was hugely popular in Russia, Romania, Turkey and China.

The intertwining lives of poor Raju and privileged Rita (Nargis) have beed described in a heart rendering way. The character of Raju in Awara is somewhat influenced by Charlie Chaplin. In the film, Kapoor's poor, innocent "little tramp" has been loved by the masses. His innocent face and innocent dialogues have made this character aunforgettable one in Hindi films. Raju in Awara lives a life of poverty because he was estranged from his father who is a wealthy district judge He threw Raj's mother out of the house years earlier due to his suspicion of infidelity. As a child, Raju and Rita are good friends in school, but the father soon tears them apart. Even though they are separated, Raju's thoughts are occupied by Rita.

Due to poverty, the character of Raju in Awara changes as the film continues. Rajs turns to petty crime and Jagga (K. N. Singh) becomes his father figure. As time passes, Raju realizes that Jagga is the man responsible for his mother's estrangement. In a fit of rage, Raju kills Jagga and also tries to kill the judge. He fails to kill the judge. Raju is brought to his own father's court and Rita serves as his lawyer. Raju is sentenced to 3 years in prison for his crime and Rita promises to wait for him.

People loved the character of Raju in Awara and it became very popular among the people. As a result of this character along with excellent music and dialogues, this film grossed over Rs.12 million which was a record.
