Bollywood has gifted us the Indian audience with fantastic movies. The movie makers , the actors, the choreographers, the script writers, the music directors all have collectively presented movies that have achieved both critical acclaim as well as commercial succes. Bollywood cinema has spawned several unforgettable characters and one of the most popular of them has to be Mr.India that had Anil Kapoor in the lead role.
This film was basically a takeoff on `The Invisible Man`. Directed by Shekhar Kapur this movie also featured Sri Devi as the luscious heroine and veteran Om Puri as the ruthless Mogambo.
Mr. India aka Arun is a penniless foster father to quite a few orphan kids. He gets Sridevi as his tenant in his mad house and thus begins the romance so to speak! Sri Devi plays Seema a reporter who would risk her life for news. Arun Verma lives in a big ,ancient house and is joined by Seema who hates kids!
The story of the film unfolds when Anil Kapoor chances upon a scientific gadget left behind by his father. The gadget can make a man invisible and the evil Mr Mogambo wants it to conquer India. Shekhar Kapur`s Mr. India perfectly blends typical Bollywood masala with western concepts and also adds doses of foot tapping music.
Mr. India`s character is an attempt or an attempted take on the typical Western average-guy-turned-into-super-hero character. Director Shekhar Kapoor brilliantly replaces the Western `tough guy` image with a typical Average Joe only of Indian origin. Mr.Kapoor used the phrase `Aam Hindustani` or common Indian repeatedly so that the audience can make a connection with the character of Mr. India.
Anil Kapoor wore the same coat, hat and very common shoes throughout the movie. He looks very ordinary, innocent and nice. Western superheroes such as Superman, Spiderman have their own super costumes but Mr.India being a typical Indian does not have any and aims to fight crime without any costume. All he has is a gadget.
Shekhar knew that costume or heavy emphasizes on super heroism would make Indian audience uncomfortable. So Mr. India remains the same with or without gadget. He epitomizes the common honest and nice Indian. Mr. India however might have a little similarity with Clark Kent aka Superman whose girlfriend also happens to be a reporter. Although it is quite an assured fact that Loise would not dance in the rain in a saree most seductive manner possible!
