Bhuvan is the main protagonist of the Hindi blockbuster Lagaan. This Academy award nominated movie is one of the most successful ventures of Bollywood film industry. The story of the film is taken from the era of British rule in India. The film tells us about the misery and wretched conditions of Indian villagers during the period of domination by British in India. Bhuvan in Lagaan represents the spirit of Indian freedom fighters who were not willing to accept the British rule in their country.
The plot of the movie Lagaan represents India in 19th century, the period of British rule. During this period the kings were the mere puppet and were dominated by the British Government. All their royal powers were taken away from them.
The story of the movie Lagaan is based on the life of the villagers of Champaner, a small village. A British cantonment was set nearby this village. Captain Russell, an egotistical, proud and tyrant commander was the head of the cantonment. He loved to torment the poor villagers for mere reasons. This led to deep anger and frustration amongst the villagers. The king of the region was helpless and unable to save the poor villagers. Villagers were oppressed with the heavy taxes levied the British Government.
Bhuvan, the main character in Lagaan, is a rebellious character. The poor peasant becomes the prey of wrath of Captain Russell and asked to play cricket again the British. He is offered a wager that if villagers win, the taxes would be cancelled. Bhuvan, the impulsive character agrees to play the game with the rulers. The movie takes a turn from this time.
Bhuvan starts practicing the game of cricket which is not a familiar sport to villagers. He tries hard to convince the villagers to join him. Primarily they were not ready to support Bhuvan to this challenge, but his confidence, courage and assurance agree them to play the game. Elizabeth, the sister of Captain Russell helped them in their venture. Bhuvan's honesty, courage, personality make Elizabeth fall in love with him. The day of sport comes and after a hard battle the villagers win the game under the leadership of Bhuvan who takes the winning stroke. It is the positive attitude, guts, self-confidence and hard work of the young villager that enable him to reach his goal.
