Released by the producer G.P. Sippy in 1975, Sholay was an instant box office hit. The movie directed by Ramesh Sippy with music composed by the legendary music director R.D. Burman, Sholay portrays the eternal human love even amidst the perils of the pain inflicting bandits (dacoits) causing violence in a peaceful little village of India. Among all the characters in this movie, the village girl Basanti in Sholay appealed the audiences. Hema Malini worked wonders in playing the magnificent role of Basanti in Sholay, with an overall spectacular performance.
In the movie, Sholay, the two crusaders, Jai and Veeru (also ex-convicts) were brought to the village by the moralistic landlord, Thakur, in order to save the innocent villagers from the oppressions of a gang of bandits led by the infamous Gabbar Singh. The rustic young man Veeru, played perfectly by Dharmendar, fell in love with Hema Malini as Basanti in Sholay by the eternal rules of nature. The movie portrays the sizzling love between the pair of lovers who struggle hard to stand by each other winning through the evil spells of the bandit lord.
The colors of the character Basanti in Sholay were well portrayed by Hema Malini blending her extraordinary talents in the dance sequences. The most spectacular scene played by her in the movie, was the dance Basanti had to perform in front of the bandits with tortured Veeru, tied to a pole. In that sequence she, as Basanti, was forced to dance barefoot on the floor covered with pieces of broken glass. Hema Malini expressed the perfect touch of sorrow and pain in the eyes of the country girl, Basanti, who was portrayed to be unaware of the gives and takes of life.
Hema Malini made the audiences spellbound, exhibiting her beaut, talent and charm in the perfect blend, as needed, for portraying the character of Basanti in Sholay. Her dialogs were presented in a simple yet touching tone with the pure expressions, expected from a young village girl. In the romantic scenes with Dharmendar, as Veeru, the talented actress upheld the chemistry of their love in the purest possible form. The romance exhibited by Hema Malini as Basanti, held the charm of the country, where the relationships are not tainted by the dark shades of misgivings. Basanti displayed a loud and very much living character expressing the pleasures and pains of life in her very own style with gusto. She in fact perfectly matched with the colors of the other characters in this fascinating production making Sholay an unforgettable performance of all times.
