Sukhwinder Singh is considered as one of the popular playback singers in Bollywood. He shot to fame with the song ' Chaiyya Chaiyya ' from the film ' Dil Se'. The music of the film was composed by music director A.R. Rehman. This song bagged him the 1999 Filmfare award as the 'Best Male Playback Singer'. His latest hit is the song ' Chak De' for the film 'Chak De India'.

Sukhwinder Singh's Early Life

Sukhwinder Singh made his first stage performance at the age of 7 with one of Lata Mangeskar's songs- Sa re ga ma pa, pa, pa, ga, ma, re, ga re mere sang mere saajna.' With T. Singh he brought out a Punjabi album- Munda Southhall Da. Later he joined as a music arranger in Laxmikant Pyarelal's music group. He appeared in a film called 'Rakhagan' before he traveled to South India to find work.

The Beginning of Sukhwinder Singh's Career as a Playback Singer

Sukhwinder Singh launched his career as a playback singer with the song ' Aa ja sanam' for the film ' Khilaf'. The film had Madhuri Dixit as the leading lady. However, he was not satisfied with his song quality. He left Mumbai and traveled to various places in America and England and took lessons in different types of music.

After returning to Mumbai he sang for the Hindi film 'Aaja Sanam'. Then ' Dil Se' fell into his lap. The song ' Chaiyya Chaiyya' from this film established him as one of the top singers in Bollywood. Following the huge success of ' Dil Se' he sang for films like Taal, 1947 Earth, Biwi No 1 , Moksha, Thakshak and Daag. He owes his success to A. R Rahman. Presently, he is working with A Rahman on various film projects. Besides singing, he also composes music. His latest stint as a music director in the movie Black & White is widely appreciated by the audience.
