Richa Sharma is one of the popular singers in Bollywood in India. She was born on 29 August in Faridabad, Haryana. This popular Indian film singer started her musical career when she was 8 years old. Richa began singing quite early and was trained by her father. The first guru of Richa Sharma was her father Late Sh. Pandit Dayal Shankar Upadheyay.
She is the youngest of seven children and her father was the temple priest in Faridabad. Both her father and mother Manorma Devi taught Richa Sharma bhajans specially Mata Ke Jagran. At the age of eight she sang before religious congregations in Delhi. She enrolled herself in Gandharva Mahavidyalaya.
Richa Sharma went under training in Indian classical and light music under the tutelage of Pandit Aaskaran Sharma. Slowly she added in her repertoire film songs, ghazals, Rajasthani folk songs and Punjabi numbers. Her academic education had to be sacrificed for her musical career.. She came to Mumbai in 1994 to start off her musical career.
She struggled hard to gain a foothold in Bollywood and sang cover versions and bhajans. In Bollywood, Richa Sharma made her debut in 1996 with Sawan Kumar's Salma Pe Dil Aa Gaya. She later sang in a number of movies and her major hit was in the movie Taal where she sang for AR Rahman.
After this Richa Sharma had a number of successes with hits in movies like Hera Pheri (Lalit Sen), Zubedia, Saathiya (with AR Rahman) and Khakhee (Ram Sampath), Baghban (Title Song for Aadesh Shrivastava); Tarkeeb (the song Duppatte Ka Palu), Soch (the song Nikal Chali Be for Jatin-Lalit), Gangajal (Sandesh Shandilya), Popcorn Khao Mast Ho Jao (for Vishal-Shekhar), Rudraksh, Kal Ho Na Ho (Sad version of the title track for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) and the Kaante (Mahi Ve for Anand Raaj Anand).
She became more popular as a host of the show Antakshri on Zee TV with Anu Kapoor. Her cheerfulness and simple style of hosting won a lot of attention. The successful show ended after a year with her as a host. This versatile Bollywood playback singer has finished a few albums which showcased her talent.
Her class and graceful voice was heard in albums like Piya, Ni Main Yaar Nu Sajda Kardi and Winds of Rajasthan (Times Music released early 2004). Presently Richa Sharma has received reviews in Musafir and she is excited about the songs in the film.
Richa Sharma is also looking forward to a number of releases like A R Rahman's The Rising & Ada, Salim Suleiman's Kaal, Anand Raaj Anand's Kaanch, Himesh Reshmmaiya's untitled venture for David Dhawan, Mira Nair's Vanity Fair and Sen Brothers' Sheesha.
Richa Sharma has won awards like Bollywood Movie Award for the Best Singer Female 2003 - Mahi Ve (Kaante).
