Noor Jehan was one of the famous singer and actress in Indian Hindi cinema. She is one of the popular singers in Bollywood. Noor Jehan has been awarded with the title Mallika-e-Tarranum by Pakistan or the "Queen of Melody".She is one of the legendary singers of Indian subcontinent. Noor Jehan has given her voice in nearly 10,000 songs in different languages like Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi for both Indian and Pakistani films. Her granddaughter Sonya Jehan currently working as an actor in Bollywood. Noor Jehan was born on September 21, 1926.
Noor Jehan was a great singer of her times. She was blessed with a melodious voice. Noor Jehan had fabulous singing skills from the very early age of her life. She could sing anything whether any folk song or any popular song of that era. Soon her mother realized her singing talents and wanted her daughter to become popular. Soon her family moved to Lahore where her sisters tried their luck in acting careers.
After shifting to Lahore, her family moved to Calcutta hoping that her sisters would get a break into films. But her sisters could make an entry into films. During the year 1930, Noor Jehan was given her first break in a silent feature film called "Hind ke Tare", produced by Indian Pictures. After that the family shifted to Bombay where she acted in several silent films.
Noor Jehan was offered the role of heroine in an Urdu film "Khandaan" in the year 1942,with costar Pran in the male lead. The film was directed by Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi who later became her husband. The songs of Khandaan which was composed by Ghulam Haider gained a lot popularity and soon she established herself as one of the leading singers in Indian films.
Noor Jehan acted in her first film when she was only four years old. In the year 1946, Noor Jehan acted in one of the classic of that era "Anmol Ghadi" . The film was known for its many magical moments accompanied by super hit songs composed by Naushad. During that time the composers and lyricists felt privileged to get their songs sung by Noor Jehan. Some of her other films are Dil, Humjoli, Sofia.
During the Partition of India in the year 1947,Noor Jehan decided to settle down in Lahore which became the part of newly created Pakistan. Talking about Bollywood, it suffered a huge loss because the legendary singer Noor Jehan became Pakistani then.
In the year 1955, Noor Jehan acted in a Punjabi film, Patey Khan. There she fell in love with the distributor of the film, M. Naseem. This became the cause of divorce between Noor Jehan and Shaukat Hussain Rizvi,her first husband. She had her good times and bad both in marriages and divorces. Some film magazines wrote about her casual,serious love affairs,heart breaks, popularity and many things but she faced all of them with confidence and grace.
She spent her last days at her hometown Kasur. She died of heart failure on December 23, 2000. All throughout her lifetime she has sang in several films and was known as the "nightingale of Punjab". She has acted and sung in number of films like Mirza Ghalib,Koel, Pardaisan, Neend, Anarkali, Choomantar, Nooran, Intezar, Lakht-e-Jigar, Patey Khan,Gulnar and many more.
