A look at the early life of Mohammad Rafi gives us fascinating details about his humble origins.
Facts indicate that Mohammed Rafi was born at Kotla Sultan Singh town near Amritsar. His father was Hajji Ali Mohammad, and he had five older brothers. Mohammad Rafi, began singing by imitating the chants of a fakir in his village.[1] In 1935-36, Rafi's father shifted to Lahore, while his elder brother-in-law Mohammed Hameed was aware of Rafi's penchant for music and encouraged Rafi to learn Hindustani classical music from Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwanlal Matto and Firoze Nizami in the later years.
Mohammad Rafi 's first stage performance came at the age of 13 when one day Rafi and his brother in law Hameed went to attend a performance by K. L. Saigal. But since the legendary singer coulnt perform there due to unavoidable circumstances, Hameed went up to the organizer and requested them to let his brother-in-law sing. His singing career began when he was picked up by composer Shyam Sunder, to sing a duet song with Zeenat Begum, in the Punjabi film Gul Baloch in 1942. Mohammad Rafi established himself as the leading singer of the nation with the songs of Baiju Bawra also the radio program Binaca Geetmala widely played his songs, leading to his increasing popularity.
