Mahalaxmi Iyer is one of the popular singers in Bollywood. She is popular for her Tamil and Hindi songs. Apart from these languages she has also sung in Gujarati, Assamese, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam. Mahalaxmi Iyer has a musical family background as her mother is a Carnatic classical singer.

Her singing debut was in Mani Ratnam's movie 'Dil Se' (1998) with A R Rahman. She sang in the movie Dus where Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy debuted as music directors. After this she has also sung in numerous songs in serials jingles, films and original albums.

Mahalaxmi Iyer started singing in 1992 - 93 when she was invited by the production houses for singing jingles. She started her career in Mumbai and South India. In Mumbai she recorded a song for the world pageant as requested by Ilayaraja.

He went back to Chennai and asked her to come there for recording a Tamil song.

Mahalaxmi Iyer also sang in movies like Yaadein, Mission Kashmir and Saathiya. She has worked with some of the illustrious Bollywood music composers like A R Rahman, Jatin-Lalit, Anu Malik and others. Another achievement was she had sung for all of the Yash Raj Productions' biggest blockbuster movies. Some of these are Dhoom 2, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Salaam Namaste, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Bunty Aur Babli and Fanaa.

In her musical career she has been appreciated for her songs like Har Taraf from Rishtey (2002), Kabhi Sham Dhale from Sur: The Melody of Life (2002). Some of her hit songs include Aaj Ki Raat from Don (2006), Chup Chup Ke from Bunty Aur Babli (2005) and Bol Na Halke Halke from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

Presently Mahalaxmi Iyer is considered to be one of India's most famous playback singers, along with popular singers like Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan.
