Kundan Lal Saigal was one of the legendary singers of Hindi film music industry. He was the first one to bring ghazals in Indian mainstream cinema. In a short span of fifteen years, Kundan Lal Saigal had acted in nearly thirty six films and sang in nearly two hundred songs. He was one of the pioneering singer of Indian cinema who had a unique voice. Despite having attained the stardom, K.L. Saigal was simple by heart. He created history with the film Devdaas in the year 1935 which was based the novel
of a Bengali writer Sharadchandra Chaterjee. Some of the best songs of are "Balam Aao Baso Morey Man Mein" and "Dukh Ke Ab Din Bitat Nahi".Till date he is one of the popular singers in Bollywood.
Talking about the early life of Kundan Lal Saigal, he was born at Jammu which is in the northern part of India. His father Amarchand Saigal worked for Maharaja Pratap Singh.Kundan Lal Saigal was born on 12th April 1904. He learnt singing in Jalandhar. He never took any formal training in singing .
When just Saigal was just thirteen, his voice cracked. He was so shocked at this that he did not sing for many months. Someone advised his family to take him to a saint. The saint advised him to practice some his therapies to get back his voice. He religiously followed the treatment given by the saint. Within few years he was able to know the difference between the tone and notes.
Before establishing himself as an actor,Saigal was working as a clerk in Indian Railways. Later he became a Hotel Manager. After that he worked for Remington Typewriter Co. Saigal came into the field of music due to his mother. In the year 1932 Kundan Lal Saigal started working for New Theatre as an actor and singer in films. He was paid Rs 200 per month as mentioned in his contract.
Talking about Bollywood, Kundan Lal Saigal is known for his films like Subah Ke Sitare, Zinda Laash and Mohabbat Ke Aason. He has also given his voice in Premnagar Mein Basoongi Ghar Main, Tadapat Beeti Din Rain and Prem Ki Ho Jai. His first feature film was Chandidas in which he was the lead actor.
Kundan Lal Saigal passed away at the age of forty two on 18th January 1947 in his hometown Jalandhar. During his last moments he expressed his last wish to hear the song "Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya Hum Jee Kya Karenge". The touchy songs composed by the legendary music director Naushad. This great singer of all times passed away gifting his fans some of the golden songs of that era. The songs of Saigal still lingers fresh in the memories of music lovers and they regard him as one of the immortal singers of Bollywood.
