Kumar Sanu is one of the popular singers in Bollywood. He was born on September 23, 1957 as Kedarnath Bhattacharya in the city of Kolkata in West Bengal. The father of Kumar Sanu is Pashupati Bhattacharjee who is an accomplished classical vocalist and composer. Kumar Sanu learnt the skills of singing from his father. After completion of his college from Calcutta University, Sanu did a number of stage shows. During that time he also sang in number of restaurants around Calcutta. The Bollywood singer Kishore Kumar was his ideal. He struggled a lot to make a career, but could not achieve much success.
In the year 1987, the famous singer and music director Jagjit Singh gave Kumar Sanu his first break for the Hindi film Aandhiyan. Soon He headed for Bollywood to make a career there. After that there was no looking back as the music director Kalyanji-Anandji gave him a chance to sing in the film Jaadugar. Kalyanji-Anandji asked him to change his name to Kumar Sanu as this name was appealing in Bollywood.
Kumar Sanu tasted his first by singing songs for the film Aashiqui. Most of the songs from this film were instant hit. The music directors Nadeem-Shravan made Kumar Sanu sing all the songs. Some of the hit songs from Aashiqui include Sanson ki zaroorat hai jaise, Tu meri zindagi hain, Nazar ke saamne, Jaane jigar jaaneman, Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum and Dheere, dheere se meri zindagi mein aana. He has won many Film fare awards as the best male playback singer. He has also sung for the films Saajan (1991), Deewana (1992), Baazigar (1993), and 1942: A Love Story (1994).
Soon Kumar Sanu became the first choice for the music directors Nadeem-Shravan. They made him do the playback singing for the films like Sadak for the song Tumhe apna bana ne ki kasam khayi hai, title song of the film Deewana , Baazigar for the title song, Kali kali ankhen, Saajan for the song Jeeye to jeeye kaise and Mera dil bhi kitna pagal hai, Pardes for the songs like Meri Mehbooba, Do dil mil rahe hain and others.
Some of his recent hit songs include from the film Humraaz, a Pakistani film Yeh Dil Aapka Huwa, Karz, Dil Ka Rishta, Indian Babu, Ishq Vishk, Andaaz, Qayamat, Hungama and Footpath. He is also trying his hand as a music director and also recently he has also produced a film for Bollywood named Utthaan.
He has received the Film fare best male playback award for the songs like Aab Tere Bin Jeelenge from the film Aashiqui directed by Mahesh Bhatt,the sensational song "Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai" from the film Saajan, Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar from the hit film Deewana in the year 1992 ,Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen from the film Baazigar.The ever melodious Ek Ladki Ko Dekha from the film 1942: A Love Story and many more
