Asha Bhonsle is regarded as the reigning melody queen of Hindi cinema. The artful expressive style of Asha Bhonsle's songs makes her undoubtedly her one of the most Popular Singers in Bollywood. Asha Bhosle was born in small village near Goar in Sangli district of Maharashtra.
Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was an accomplished theater actor and classical singer of that time. When she was nine years old, her father died, the family then moved from Pune to Kolhapur and then settled in Bombay. She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to financially support their family. Asha Bhonsle sang her first film song Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi movie Majha Bal in 1943. She made her debut in Hindi film in Hansraj Behl's Chunariya in 1948.
Asha Bhonsle 's personal life too had its share of up's and downs as at the age of 16, she eloped with 31-year old Ganpatrao Bhosle but the marriage failed miserably and after few years she returned back to her maternal place. While we talk about Bollywood, the contributions made by Asha Bhonsle are immense. In the 1950s, she sang more songs than any other playback singer in Bollywood, but most of these were in B or C-grade films. Her earliest songs were composed by A R Qureshi, Sajjad Hussain and Ghulam Mohammed. Her songs in Dilip Kumar-starrer Sangdil composed by Sajjad Hussain, got her some recognition. Bimal Roy gave her a chance to sing in Parineeta followed by Raj Kapoor with Mohammed Rafi in Boot Polish which became a hit. From 50's to 2000, Asha Bhonsle rendered hits after hits.
