Alka Yagnik is one of the female playback singers who have glorified Bollywood movies by their extraordinary singing. This Indian singer was born on 20th March in the year 1966. When Alka Yagnik was born, her parents were settled at Calcutta in the state of West Bengal. Alka was born in a family with a musical background. Both of Alka's father and mother were excellent classical singers.
Alka Yagnik learnt music from her childhood days. She has an excellent training in classical music at the age of six. Alka started performing for the Calcutta Radio. She used to sing bhajans in radio. The mother of Alka Yagnik, who was a Classical singer, was determined that her daughter would prosper as a singer in the future years. In order to make her sing as a child singer in the Bollywood movies, Alka Yagnik was taken to Mumbai when she was only a ten year old girl. Alka was taken to Raj Kapoor, who sent her to Laxmikant after listening to her beautiful voice and musical expertise.
The famous producer heard her and gave her two options- an instaneous beginning as a dubbing artist, or a later career as a full-fledged playback singer. Alka Yagnik went for the second option.
Her singing career in Mumbai commenced in the year 1979. In the initial years of her singing career, she sang for the movies like "Payal Ki Jhankaar" released in the year 1979 and "Laawaris" released in 1981. Her song "Mere Angene Mein" that appeared in the film "Laawaris" became extremely famous. But it is with her song "Ek Do Tin" from the movie "Tezaab" that she got recognition as a singer. She became a star by singing this song. Again, it is this song that brought to her the Best Female Playback Award. This is her first Filmfare award.
Throughout 1980s, Alka Yagnik sang for the several super-hit films that Bollywood produced. Apart from the Hindi songs, Alka Yagnik also sang several songs in Bengali, Marathi and Punjabi.
