Baldev Raj Chopra is one of the most respected personalities in the Hindi film industry. Popularly known as B.R. Chopra, he has worked hard during his initial years to create a mark in the golden era of the Bollywood. He has woven some immortal classics and commands great respect in the world film fraternity. B.R.Chopra was born in Lahore. After his completion of post graduation in English from Lahore University, he showed great interest in films. He started writing reviews and editing film reviews for the Cine Herald journal. A few years later he started to direct and produce films. After his initial success, B.R.Chopra created his production company in the year 1955, which he named as B.R. Films. Under this banner, he made some immortal movies like 'Ek Hi Raasta' (1956), 'Naya Daur' (1957), 'Sadhana' (1958), 'Kanoon' (1960), 'Gumrah' (1963) and 'Humraaz' (1967). He also gave his younger brother Yash Chopra several opportunities to direct his films under his banner.
Baldev Raj Chopra always wished to make films which are socially relevant. He also tried to cater to the taste of the common people. Almost all his movies deal with important social issues. In the year of 1985, Baldev Raj Chopra turned to television and directed the most successful mega serial 'Mahabharat'. It was the most successful television show ever. This television show entered the Guinness Book of World Records because of registering more than 96% world viewer ship.
He has a number of films to his credit. He produced some of the immortal movies, which includes the following:
Counted among one of the best Bollywood screenwriters, Baldev Raj Chopra has bagged a number of prestigious awards because of his sheer talent and hard work. He received the Filmfare Best director award in the year 1962 for the movie 'Kanoon'. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Screen in the year 1996. The Bombay International Film Festival honored him with the Lifetime Achievement award in the year 1999. He also bagged the 2004 Lifetime Achievement award by the Filmfare. In 1999, B.R.Chopra was awarded the most prestigious award in the film industry, Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema.
