After the success of his first two directorial ventures with Salman Khan, Suraj starred him in most of his movies. He named the lead actor of all his movies "Prem". After two major hits, he released Hum Saath-Saath Hain in 1999, which was a semi-hit. The movie highlighted the importance of joint family and brought to light the Indian family values. His fourth film was Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon starring Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachachan and Kareena Kapoor.

Suraj Barjatya's Vivah in 2006 starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao proved to be one of the biggest blockbusters in his career since Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. All his films are produced under the Rajshri Productions banner which was first founded in 1947 by his late grandfather Tarachand Barjatya. Suraj Barjatya is known for his family-romantic movies.
